Amethyst History
Amethyst is a variety of quartz. Ancient Egyptians used amethyst as a gemstone and it has been found in bead form in old graves in England. When amethyst is heated it turns yellow and a lot of yellow topaz and citrine jewelry comes from this treatment. Ancient Greeks and Romans used to make drinking glasses from amethyst because they thought it would keep them from getting drunk. Amethyst has a hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale and is found in many places such as Russia, India, and Sri Lanka.
